This breed originated in the 19th century in the Canary Islands. It sprung from the Bardino Majero, a local working dog, which was also used in dog fights. With the outlawing of this entertainment, the breed was nearly lost, but a group of enthusiasts collected efforts and salvaged the dog.

Canary dogs are very sturdy and protective around their families. They stand 21-25 inches high at the shoulder and weigh around 85-100 pounds.
