Presa Canario Canary Dogs - History

Presa Canario dogs have experienced ups and downs in the course of history. These dogs are now gaining in popularity with the quality of the breeding stock being constantly improved. The breed originated on the Canary Islands, which got the name after the dog, not a famous bird. In fact, the word "cane" gave rise to the island name. The island was referred to as "the Island of Dogs."

The Canario dog originated from fierce smooth-coated dog found on farms and used as working dogs. They were called Majero and are believed to resemble the Perro de Pastor Mallorquin and the Cao de Castro Laboreiro. These dogs were widely spread on the territory of the Canary Islands before the Spanish settled there.

In the 19th century, Mastiffs and Old-style Bulldogs appeared on the Canary Islands. They were crossed with the native dogs and the end result was the Canary dog, also referred to as the Canario dog.

The purpose of the new breed was for fighting, which was rather popular at that time. The dogs were strong and agile. They were famous for their game and courage. Presa Canario dogs of the time were considered a great fighting machine, yet started to decline in numbers after the sport of dog fighting was outlawed.

The appearance of the German Shepherd dog at the Canary Islands contributed to the breed decline. Driven away by more fashionable breeds and the loss of its original functions, the Presa Canario dog found itself at the age of extinction.

Presa Canario Canary Dogs - Recovering

Happily, the interest in native breeds of dogs started to renew at the end of the century compelling some enthusiasts to try to reestablish the Presa Canario dog. Several good specimens were found on the farms and in a few years Presa Canario breeding brought fruitful results. Nowadays, Presa Canario dogs are gaining in numbers, yet are not recognized by the AKC.
