Generally, Presa Canario dogs are impressive and powerful. The coat is short, usually of brindle color. Fawn is also possible. Presa Canario dogs should have a tick skin on the neck. When a dog is standing, the skin forms loose wrinkles. The tail is thick at the base and narrows to the tip. When in action, the Presa Canario dog carries the tail like a saber. Yet, it should never curve over the back.

The Presa Canario dog has been bred to be used in fighting and has retained its courage and fearless personality. The breed is recommended for experienced owners and those who have enough time to train a dog. In fact, the Presa Canario dog needs a lot of training to keep it under control. Due to their great weight and fearlessness, these dogs may be dangerous if untrained. Training should start early.

Generally, Presa Canario dogs make good guardians and companions. They like to spend time around people, yet can be suspicious of strangers. They are relatively aggressive in disposition; yet they tend to be affectionate towards the owners. Tolerance of other dogs is minimal. Therefore, Presa Canario dogs may be a poor choice for people who have other pets in the household.
