It should be mentioned that the Presa Canario dog is relatively new in the United States and the health problems of the breed should receive further attention. There are a few disorders inherent in the breed, yet their incidence is not known yet.

Presa Canario Canary Dogs - Demodectic Mange

It is known that Presa Canario dogs are prone to demodectic mange. Mites that affect a dog and start living on the hair follicles cause this condition. In fact, a small portion of these mites may be present in any healthy dog, which is quite bearable. The way of transmission is not completely known. Since this condition is found mostly in dogs with a poor immune system, it may be related to inheritance. It is recommended to spay/neuter the affected dogs to avoid getting diseased progeny.

Presa Canario Canary Dogs - Canine Epilepsy

Some Presa Canario dogs have been reported to suffer from canine epilepsy. Seizures that occasionally occur in a dog and do not seem to have a cause are considered canine epilepsy. Affected dogs become nervous and restless. After that, seizures occur. Excessive saliva production is peculiar for the condition. Most seizures will last for about 1-3 minutes. In severe cases, affected Presa Canario dogs should be given special medication.
